Newman Scholars
Each year, a cohort of students is selected to perform an in-depth study of the life and thought of St. John Henry Cardinal Newman. This intellectual giant was recently designated the 38th Doctor of the Catholic Church by Pope Leo XIV. Newman's contributions to Catholic thought have massively influenced Holy Mother Church over the past two centuries.
The purpose of the scholars program is to learn how to study and think with the mind of the Church. The deposit of faith given to the apostles in seed form has blossomed into a 1.4 billion member body. Newman's thought on Development of Doctrine, while not a completely original idea, has coherently expressed how the Church grows over time. Newman's work on the Idea of a University reminds all readers what the whole point of a University is: to form Christian men and women to be virtuous scholars. In Newman's time, as well as today, most universities are not committed to this ideal. Newman Scholars study these two works on his in order to share these ideas with peers.
